Travel & Athleisure: Airplane Essentials

WELCOME! To the Travel & Athleisure Series. I’ll be adding posts based on my personal experience of what’s comfy yet fashionable for all your travel needs. First up: my very first batch of airplane essentials.

With all the traveling I do, it’s appropriate to assume I know a thing or two about appropriate airline attire. I’m gonna be blunt here: There’s no cure for “swass.” You can sheet mask the shit out of your face, sneak deodorant, brush your locks of hair all over the person next to you, chomp on some gum for a refresher. BUT, if you’re buckled up for a long period of time, there’s no doubt you’re going to stick a bit.

Despite my apparent doom, I do have a few suggestions for OOTP (that’s outfits on the plane, and yeah I think I made it up?).

The Pants: Lululemon Align Jogger

Lululemon’s Align yoga pants are no secret. They’re buttery soft and feel like you’re walking around naked (without the embarrassment). And while I own quite a few pairs of the yoga pants, it’s the jogger I’m obsessed with right now.

They feel just like the yoga pants, but offer ankle details that give them some texture, and side pockets that play them off as an everyday pant. I love anything high-waisted, and when you can find a pant that features a comfortable waistband that lies flat against your skin and won’t dig in, you should put your frugalness aside and cough up the cash.

I own the black and olive green in full-length (28-inch inseam).

Bulk is not your friend on a plane, so leave the cool leather jacket or oversized sweatshirt at home or packed in your checked bag. I’ve found that a blanket/scarf/wrap/sarong/pashmina is clutch. It swaddles you, warms you and looks fashionable.

The Shoes: Vivobarefoot Women's Ultra L-w

I used to be a sandals on a plane type of gal, but my feet never failed to look and feel absolutely disgusting. Wearing heels is obviously out of the question, and something like Converse just feels way too restrictive. My happy medium is a pair of Vivobearfoot sneakers. They feel like you’re wearing nothing, but still manage to give you support when you’re charging through the airport.

The Bag: Targus Newport Convertible 2-in-1 Tote Bag and Backpack

I’ve finally figured out the perfect under-the-seat item for a plane. It’s a BURSE! Well, actually it’s a hybrid of a backpack and a purse and I am in love with it. Basically, you get all the compartments and depth of a backpack, with the ability to whip out some straps and wear it like a purse for a more fashionable look.

The Bra: Anemone Sexy Criss-Cross Strappy Front Design Bra Top

I now have this bra in four colors. It’s a one size fits (most), offers me plenty of coverage and moderate support, and looks great under a low V-neck or sheer T-shirt. I usually despise padding, but because this doesn’t offer much push-up, it’s nice to add a little shape to your chest by keeping the pads in. It’s super affordable, doesn’t pill and washes well. I have black, white, burnt orange, red.
